Star Wars Black (The Force Awakens): Guavian Enforcer by Hasbro

I’m up to the fourth and final release in the second wave of Hasbro’s 6-inch Black “Force Awakens” figures. This time, I’m checking out the Guavian Enforcer. I won’t get into specifics, but I will say that unlike Constable Zuvio, these guys not only had some screen time, but amazingly enough were actually mentioned by name. In fact, with two of the figures in this wave now in my collection I can finally recreate one of the cooler scenes from the film. But I’ll save the super spoilery picture for last.

swbguav2

There’s the in-package shot. I don’t have a lot to say, except the red and black on this guy matches the packaging new Black Series boxes pretty dead on. The back gives you a little snippet about how these guys work for the Guavian Gang. If that’s a name that strikes fear, I’m guessing that in a galaxy far, far away, guavas are something very different than in our galaxy.

swbguav3

swbguav4

I didn’t know what to make of this guy before seeing the movie, but I really dig the design. The crimson suit features all sorts of texture and wrinkles as well as a wash to bring out that lovely detail. He wears a high belt of pouches across his stomach and a complex network of belts and straps around his waist. I’m not sure what’s going on with the cable pumping something either into or out of his left knee, but who cares? It looks cool. The back of the suit has a subdued circuitry-like pattern etched into it. There’s also some decent texture on the boots. If I had one complaint about The Enforcer’s design is that the feet are kind of small.

swbguav5

The head is just crazy. Is it a robot or a mask? I’m sure the whole history of these guys has already been published in some book somewhere. If not, it will be soon enough. There’s a little silver dry brushing to show a worn slash across the front. The recessed machinery that’s exposed around the center dot of the mask looks great. The articulation here is right in line with what the 6-inch Black Series has been offering lately. The arms are ball jointed at the shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The legs are ball jointed at the hips, have swivels at the thighs, and double hinges in the knees. The ankles are hinged and have lateral rockers. There’s a ball joint in the torso and again at the neck. He’s pretty fun to pose!

swbguav9

swbguav11

swbguav10

The Guavian Enforcer does his enforcing with two beefy guns. One looks like a big pistol, while the other looks like a drum-fed grenade launcher. He can hold them in either hand. The sculpts are decent and they’re both painted in a matching gray and silver.

swbguav7

swbguav12

What else can I say, other than I like this figure a lot. Next to Phasma, he’s my favorite figure in the wave, but then there wasn’t a whole lot of competition here. I’m sure Hasbro hoped to sell him based on speculation alone before the movie was released, but even afterwards, I think the design is cool enough to make him a fairly popular figure. And like I said earlier, now I can finally recreate this awesome scene…

swbguav1

“Make your escape, Solo. I, Zuvio will hold off Darth Guava’s deadly enforcers. You must get Qui-Gon’s remains back to the ship so McCoy can revive him with midichlorians  from the magic Tribble blood!”

Star Wars Black (The Force Awakens): Poe Dameron by Hasbro

I’ve got two more figures to look at in this, the second wave of The Force Awakens 6-inch Black Series, and since I let one day slack to actually go see the movie (twice!) I’m going to try hard to get them both in today. I’m starting this afternoon with Poe Dameron in his X-Wing Pilot Suit, a figure that I was truly excited to open up after seeing the movie. Not to worry, I’m going to be really respectful about not including any spoilers, but let me just say, I really loved this character and Oscar Isaac’s portrayal of him. He was instantly likable and I hope to see a lot more of him. Let me also say how sad I am that the first figure I look at after seeing the amazing film has to be such a let down.

poepilot1

The package shows off the figure well and that’s a good thing, because it allows you to take a good look at him and decide if you really want him or not. But I’m getting ahead of myself…

poepilot2

poepilot3

Try not to look at the head too much, because I’m going to deal with that in a bit. Going from the neck down, I think this is a solid effort. It’s a pretty good rendition of the new style of X-Wing Pilot suit. You get a lot of elements that add depth and credibility to the sculpt, like the belts hanging off his waist and wrapping around his legs, and the additional chest piece and connecting hose. The suit itself is nicely textured and rumpled in all the right places. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, even in the 3 3/4-inch line, but like I said, all in all a solid effort. I was eager to put the figure next to my X-Wing Pilot Luke from the first wave and see the differences in the suit designs, but more than anything it showed me how wonky the scale in this line has been. You can scroll down to the end for that picture, but suffice it to say Poe looks like a giant compared to Luke. Yeah, Luke was a short guy, but c’mon! And then there’s the head sculpt…

poepilot4

Seriously, Hasbro? This is the head sculpt you went with… for a collector line. I have only two questions: Did you pay the guy who sculpted this? And if so, is it too late to stop payment on the check? This is just terrible. It looks like someone gave a flight suit to Humphrey Bogart’s homely brother, who also happened to be stoned… and possibly recently suffered a stroke. It looks nothing like Oscar Isaac. If this guy asked me for the keys to an X-Wing, I’d make him walk a straight line for me before I let him get behind the stick. As bad as the sculpt is, the paint isn’t doing it any favors either. Collector line, my ass. Don’t invite people to dinner, Hasbro, if you don’t know how to cook.

poepilot6

Articulation here isn’t bad. The arms feature rotating hinges in the shoulders and elbows. The wrists have swivel cuts, which are a bit further up the arm to facilitate the arm swap, which I’ll get to with the accessories. The legs are ball jointed at the hips, have double jointed knees, and swivels in the thighs. The ankles feature some funky-looking hinges and have lateral rockers. There’s a ball joint just below the chest, which is discretely placed under the vest piece. The neck has both a hinge and a ball joint, but the head sits rather strangely on the figure and has a hard time looking up.

poepilot7

Accessories include a pistol, which fits in his holster, a helmet, and two swappable hands. The pistol isn’t terribly remarkable. It’s OK, but his hands aren’t really sculpted to hold it straight. It looks like it’s drooping or like he’s about to drop it, even with the finger in the trigger guard.

poepilot9

The helmet looks good on its own, but it doesn’t fit the figure all that well. It looks like it’s designed to be worn with the visor above the eyes, but even then, it’s an awkward fit. Then again, it might just be an optical illusion because of the asymmetrical deco.

poepilot10

The extra arms feature the hands without the gloves. A nice bonus, I suppose, but frankly I’d rather they invested the time and money in a decent head sculpt first.

poepilot12

It’s been over a year. You tell me, is this line showing improvement?

poepilot11

poepilot5

Poe definitely got the short stick when it came to this action figure. Finn’s and even Rey’s were better than this and while the Target Exclusive jacketed version of Poe didn’t have a great head sculpt either, I still think it was loads better than this one. It’s a shame, because I really liked him a lot in the film and I was really looking forward to getting this figure on my shelf. I would have been content with a decent 6-inch version, but as of right now, Hot Toys, looks like the ball is in your court.

Star Wars Black (The Force Awakens): Constable Zuvio by Hasbro

Nope, no changebots today. As mentioned yesterday, I’m doing a Star Wars thang for the rest of the week. Yesterday I looked at what was easily the most anticipated figure in the second assortment of The Force Awakens Black Series, and now I’m looking at what was probably the least… Constable Zuvio!

constz1

Now, don’t get me wrong, I definitely wanted this guy. Getting figures based on Star Wars characters I know nothing about is a fond memory of my childhood, as is making up convoluted backstories about them that turn out to be wrong. I have a feeling Constable Zuvio will have a slightly bigger part to play than the Squidheads and Prunefaces of my youth, but maybe not. I’ll know in a couple of days.

constz2

Zuvio is a somewhat short and stocky humanoid and I really dig the look of this guy. He’s got a filthy poncho and his wrapped arms and legs lead me to believe that he’s yet another resident of Jakku. The paint on the figure is mostly aimed at weathering and soiling to make his outfit look rather ragged and blasted by the elements. He’s got yellow wash on his legs and some green gunk on the bottom of his poncho.

constz3

You can’t see too much of his face, just a couple of piercing eyes and a rather flattened nose, the rest is wrapped up in a scarf. His flat helmet and shoulder armor have a very Star-Warsy look to me. Again, there’s a lot more of that great weathering here. The paint on the armor is chipped away revealing the bare metal under it and the helmet is pitted and distressed. These little aspects of the figure really drive home the whole “used future” aesthetic of the original Star Wars films.

constz4

constz5

Zuvio comes with a back pack that features a rather clever design. It pegs into his back, but has some partially sculpted straps that tab into slots on his poncho to make it look like it’s properly secured to him. It’s the first time I’ve seen something like this and the effect works pretty well. Again, we see some more weathering on the backpack.

constz7

The articulation features a lot of the usual points I’m used to seeing in my 6-inch Black figures. The arms have rotating hinges in the shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The legs are ball jointed in the hips, double hinged at the knees, and have swivels in the thighs. The ankles are hinged and have lateral rockers. It feels like there’s a ball joint buried in his torso. He can definitely swivel at the waist, but I think I feel a little more movement in there as well. Lastly, his neck is both hinged and ball jointed. The plastic poncho is slit on the sides so as not to inhibit the leg articulation too badly.

constz6

In addition to the backpack, Zuvio comes with another one of those staff weapons that seem to be so popular on the desert planets of the Star Wars Universe. This one is a little more primitive than others we’ve seen. It looks like the blade is roughly forged. There’s a lot of detail on it, particularly in the handle and it has a sculpted carry strap as well.

constz8

constz10

constz9

Constables… in… Spaaaaaaaaaaace!

With the highly popular Phasma, a main character, and a troop builder all taking up the other three-quarters of this wave, I have a feeling Zuvio has a future in peg warming. If that happens, it’ll be a shame because he really is a great little figure and a pretty cool character design. With so many of the “background” characters populating the 3 3/4-inch line, it’s nice to get some exotic aliens in the larger scale, so Zuvio is welcome on my display shelf any day. And speaking of the little guys, tomorrow, I’ll take a break from the 6-inch Black line and check out some of those 3 3/4-inch figures!

Star Wars Black (The Force Awakens): Captain Phasma by Hasbro

As literally everyone knows by now, the new Star Wars film hits tomorrow, so I’m hijacking the rest of the week to look at a bunch of figures from The Force Awakens. Yeah, that means no Transformers Thursday or DC Friday and I’ll likely be taking the Star Wars content right through the weekend. I thought it only fitting to start off with that one elusive figure that has been so hard to find for so many collectors and especially for me. You see, I’ve been a patient little collector. After pre-ordering Wave 2 of The Black Series’ Force Awakens figures, I’ve been seeing them everywhere. That is all but Captain Phasma. And so for weeks now, I’ve been leaving the other three figures on the pegs, knowing that if I bought them and cancelled my pre-order, I’d probably never get everyone’s favorite chromed Stormtrooper Commander. Thankfully, the waiting has paid off and the assortment landed on my doorstep this week as my last Pile of Loot for 2015.

phas1

Phasma comes in the same kind of window box we saw used for the first assortment. The red they added for the TFA figures really jazzes up the Black Series packaging, but I don’t think the diminished window space was value added. Of course, the little blurb on the back about the character tells us nothing we don’t already know about her, which is… well, pretty much nothing. Quite frankly, I love this time before the film hits when we get to speculate about the characters, even if sometimes the reality doesn’t live up to what I work up in my head.

phas2

I’ve got to go all unconventional here and start with the paint. I was almost certain that I was going to be let down by the paint on this figure. And no, I wasn’t expecting anything like an actual chromed out vac-metal finish. Hasbro has used some truly awful looking silver plastic in the past. Just look at that Legends Ultron from the Iron Monger BAF Wave. However, I’m very pleased to say that the finish on the armor looks quite nice in hand. It looks closer to that wonderful stuff they used for Generations Leader Class Megatron. It has a really beautiful brushed steel quality that looks rather akin to a suit of medieval armor. There are a few scuffs here and there, but nothing bad and the black applications are reasonably sharp.

phas3

Of course, the other reason I started with the paint is because the sculpt here is going to be readily familiar to anyone who has already picked up the 6-inch Black First Order Stormtrooper. No, the sculpt is not identical, there are some subtle differences, particularly in the codpiece and on the lower leg armor, but there are probably more similarities than not. It is still, however, a brand new mold because Phasma does stand a good head taller than her troopers. The only real big addition is the cape, which looks great on the figure and sports some nice sculpted detail, including what appear to be patches. The painted red trim on my figure’s cape is a bit sloppy, but not terrible. The cape is theoretically removable by doing a head pop, but my Phasma’s noggin is on there pretty good and I didn’t want to risk snapping the neck post by trying.

phas4

Speaking of noggins, Phasma’s helmet is the other fairly big departure from her rank and file subordinates. It’s less rounded along the edges and adds some sculpted striping to the dome.

phas10

The articulation here is right in line with the regular Stormtroopers, but here’s a quick rundown anyway. The arms have rotating hinges in the shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The legs are ball jointed at the hips, have swivels just above the thigh armor, double hinges in the knees, and both hinges and lateral rockers in the ankles. There’s a ball joint in the torso, right below the chest armor, and a ball joint in the neck. Articulation is good on paper, but as with the regular Stormtroopers, the armor can render some of these points rather restrictive, most noticeably for me in the hips. I wouldn’t call it disappointing, because it’s exactly what I expected, but when I play around with her articulation, I always want her to be able to do just a little bit more.

phas5

phas6

phas7

Phasma comes with one accessory and that’s her blaster. It appears to be a repaint of the weapon released with the Snowtrooper, giving it the longer stock. The detail on this gun is great and the gold and black deco looks snazzy. It’s still a little too rubbery for my liking, but I guess that’s better than having pieces snap off of it. The weapon features a tab so that it can be secured to Phasma’s right thigh when not in use, just like we saw with the Stormtroopers.

phas11

phas13

phas12

I can’t express enough how relieved I am to finally have Phasma in my collection and I’m thankful we’ve got e-tailers out there who will sell complete waves instead of just cherry picking the good stuff out and marking them up. This is a great looking figure that’s only held back by some of the hindered points of articulation, and if you know me then you know that such things are not often a big concern for me. Now, whether or not the character will be worth all the bother is yet to be seen. And from what we’re hearing, we may have to wait for the next movie for Captain Phasma to get some real screen time. It’s unlikely that I’ll get out to see the film until early next week, but I’ll confess that my excitement is building a little more with each day.

Star Wars Black (The Force Awakens): Riot Control Stormtrooper and Poe Dameron by Hasbro

Wave Two of The Force Awakens 6-inch Black Series is being fickle. I have the wave pre-ordered, but now all the figures, except Captain Phasma are showing up everywhere. I can’t buy them and cancel my pre-order because then I’ll probably never get that chromed Stormy beauty and so I’m destined to wait. Well, at least there have been some exclusives to tide me over. I’ve already looked at the TRU Exclusive Snowtrooper Officer and today I’m checking out Target’s Exclusive Riot Stormtrooper and Poe Dameron 2-Pack.

poeriot1

The figures come in a window box that manages to capture the deco of the single boxed figures. You get monochrome character portraits on the front lower right corner, the red backdrop behind the tray, and the one red side panel, albeit without any numbers for the figures. The packaging is totally collector friendly and gives you a great look at what you’re getting. Let’s start with Poe, since this is the first version of him I have in this scale.

poeriot2

poeriot3

Most of what we’ve been seeing of Poe has been him in his X-Wing pilot suit, but this is regular Resistance Fighter Poe in the Galaxy Far Far Away’s version of a Members Only Jacket, which appear to be very popular in the film because we also saw it on the 6-inch Finn figure. Is it just the same figure with a head swap? Surprisingly, no. In fact, I don’t see any shared parts at all, except maybe the hand sculpts. Poe sports new trousers, boots, and a shirt with a plunging collar. Even the jacket and arm sleeves, which would have been logical recycled parts, are new on Poe. His jacket sculpt is sharper and more defined, and even has a number of different details to make it distinctive. It’s also more of a brown and less of a caramel color. The paint is OK, the red shoulder patch application is a little ham-fisted, but not too bad. He also has some spray on his knees that makes it look like he’s been kneeling in the sands of Jakku. Finn was a damn good figure, but everything about Poe from the neck down is just a bit better.

poeriot4

The portraits, on the other hand, are the other way around. I don’t see a lot of Oscar Isaac in the Dameron head sculpt, whereas I think the Finn figure is a pretty solid likeness for John Boyega. That having been said, my expectations on the 6-inch Black likenesses have been tuned down a lot this year, so I’m not terribly disappointed. The hair sculpt is decent, the paint on the eyes is good, although the paint used for his unshaven face looks a little blue to me.

poeriot5

The articulation here is identical to what we saw on Finn. The arms feature rotating hinges in the shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The legs are ball jointed at the hips, double hinged at the knees, and have swivels in the thighs. The ankles are hinged and have lateral rockers. The chest and neck both feature a ball joints.

poeriot6

poeriot7

Poe comes with two accessories: HIs flight helmet and a blaster rifle. Like Finn’s gun, Poe’s looks rather large and unwieldly and not very much like a Star Wars weapon, aside from the muzzle tip, which kind of looks like the old Rebel blaster muzzles. The helmet is a decent piece of work, although the paint is a little rough around the edges where the yellow plastic shows through. It kind of just looks like weathering. Let’s move on to the Stormtrooper…

poeriot12

I don’t have a lot to say about this guy, as he is a straight repack of the regular First Order Stormtrooper, including both of his guns, with just a couple pieces of extra gear. Actually, let me qualify that… my Riot Trooper is missing the little ding in the right shoulder armor that both of my regular First Order Troopers have. That’s the only difference that I can see. Now, don’t mistake that as a complaint. I’ve only been able to find two of the 6-inch First Order Stormies, so I’m happy to get another one, especially when its bundled with some extras and a new figure as well.

poeriot8

poeriot9

The two extras are a riot shield and a baton. While I suspect the shield is a bit of Expanded Universe equipment and not actually see in the flick, it looks good and is designed to match the armor. It’s held on the arm by two straps, but unfortunately it doesn’t appear to be designed to come off and the backstrap is seated right in his elbow articulation. I did a little snip-snip with mine and carefully cut one end of the back strap to make it removable. This allow allows him to equip it with the front strap in his hand and it gives him his elbow articulation back. All of the pictures I took for this feature were shot after I clipped it off.

poeriot11

poeriot10

That baton is like a futuristic version of the police issue PR-24 baton with some nice sculpting and painted detail. It looks like it’s meant to have a mechanism in there, so I’m guessing it’s a stun baton.

poeriot14

poeriot13

This two-pack seems to be selling for $39.99 at Target stores. I actually got mine off the website and used some scraps off a couple of Target Giftcards to get it closer to $30. Either way, it’s a pretty sweet deal. I like both figures a lot and I’m especially happy to get yet another First Order Stormtrooper for my little squad. But now I think I’m all out of Exclusives, so I’m back to waiting for my pre-order of Wave Two to roll in. Maybe I’ll pass the time by picking up some more of the 3 3/4″ figures.

Star Wars Black (The Force Awakens): First Order Snowtrooper Officer by Hasbro

I didn’t think I’d be seeing another Star Wars Black figure until the next full Wave arrives, but thanks to Toys R Us I have a little something to tide me over via their Exclusive Snowtrooper Officer. I was a little pissed off when I first saw this figure revealed and I mistook it as news that the regular First Order Snowtrooper was going to be a TRU Exclusive. Afterall, sometimes those are impossible for me to get hold of. I settled down a lot when I saw it was just the Officer variant and as it turned out I had no difficulty getting it off their website anyway.

snowtoff1

The box is right in line with what we saw in the first wave of 6-inch Force Awakens figures. It’s tweaked from the original 6-inch Black line with a larger piece of monochrome character art and a nice red background, which makes the figure pop in the package a little more. Both side panels now tell what the figure is, which was one of my gripes about the older style boxes. The red panel, however, does not designate a number for this figure, presumably because it’s an Exclusive. And speaking of Exclusives, the box does have the silver “R” sticker on the window identifying it as such.

snowtoff2

snowtoff10

Think you’re safe from the First Order just because it’s chilly where you live? Think again! Much like The Empire, TFO has specially bundled up troops to invade your icy world and oppress you. I’ll confess, I don’t like the design of these guys as much as the classic Imperial version, but I do still like it a lot. The biggest similarity is the kama, but in this case it looks like it’s evolved more into a trench coat and I ain’t hating it. I do, however, wish they had sprung for some soft goods because the plastic kama does impede the leg articulation quite a bit. But more on that later.

snowtoff9

I dig the helmet design a lot. It’s nearly featureless design, little gas mask nubs and creepy, almost non-existantly narrow eye slit conspire to create a rather disturbingly blank visage. To me, the more impersonal you can make a soldier the scarier he is and these guys are quite a bit scary.

snowtoff6

Since this is an Officer, the figure does include the rank-defining pauldron on the right shoulder and in this case it’s red. Ah, I bet Hasbro is thanking their lucky stars for the original Sandtrooper Pauldron that has since given them the ability to sell variant figures with very little effort. I presume the piece is removable, but my figure’s noggin is on there pretty good and I didn’t want to risk pulling it off and breaking the neck post. The backpack, on the other hand, is easily removed. It comes separate from the figure in the package and simply pegs right into the back. Obviously the bulk of the figure is white, although Hasbro did mix up that white to use a nice glossy coat on the armored parts and a matte for the cloth. It’s subtle, but nonetheless appreciated. A little black paint here and there and the big red pauldron are the only other real coloring to be found. Still, what’s here is pretty tidy.

snowtoff8

Articulation is serviceable, but there aren’t an over abundance of points. The arms have rotating hinges in the shoulders, elbows, and wrists, but sadly no bicep swivels. The legs are ball jointed at the hips, but that plastic kama restricts them quite a bit. The knees are double hinged, there are swivels in the thighs and the ankles feature rotating hinges and lateral rockers. The torso features a ball joint, which is cleverly masked under the chest armor and the neck also is ball jointed. Even with all that being said, the figure feels rather limited. Not to make excuses, but I imagine that might be fairly accurate for a soldier all bundled up in arctic gear.

snowtoff12

snowtoff7

Besides the backpack, the Snowtrooper Officer includes his rifle, which is not only a very nice sculpt, complete with scope and extended stock, but also features some lovely white and silver painted accents. His right hand is sculpted to hold it, complete with trigger finger that fits in the guard.

snowtoff5

snowtoff11

This guy really doesn’t hold many surprises, but I do like him a lot. A little cloth would have gone a long way to improve the range of leg movement and reinforce that this is a premium line for collectors, but there I go again setting my expectations for 6-inch Black a little too high. Still, I don’t want to go out bitching about what is a rather nice figure. I’m very glad to have been able to find him and I’ll look forward to scooping up a pair of the regular Snowtroopers when they make their appearance.

Star Wars Black (The Force Awakens) First Order Stormtrooper by Hasbro

Here we are at the fourth and final day of Force Awakens Week and I’m wrapping up my look at this initial assortment of 6-inch Black with the sexy new Stormtrooper armor of Episode 7. Yes, I am aware that Chewbacca was included in this assortment, but I opted out on him as I already have the previous Black Series release. If anyone out there got him and wants to chime in on whether he’s any different, please be my guest!

6fostorm1

Once again, there’s the newly redesigned packaging for the series and I’m still totally digging it. You get a little blurb about the new First Order Stormtroopers on the back of the box, but no answer to the one question I want to know: Can they shoot straight? When the film was first revealed, it never even occurred to me that anyone would try something so bold as to redesign the iconic Stormy armor and yet we soon got a shot of the helmet and it was love at first sight for me.

bfotroop1

Probably the most fun thing for me about getting this figure in hand, at least initially, was having the ability to scrutinize the new armor with the old. I was expecting more similarities, and in turn some parts sharing between the figures, but everything here appears to be brand new. And if I were to pick the one thing that impresses me most about this guy it would be the lovely sheen on the armor. The regular 6-inch Black Stormtrooper is an excellent figure, but the armor isn’t shiny enough for me. Put the two figures together and you can see a huge difference and that really drives home the concept of old and new.

bfotroop2

Another thing that struck me straightaway is the new armor looks and feels a tad bulkier. There’s more definition between the armor plates and some of the exposed black undersuit, particularly in the inner thighs. Somehow I just think this new guy is a little more convincing as a guy in armor.
Obviously there isn’t a whole lot of paint variety on this figure. What’s here is mostly good. There’s a little slop here and there and some even black lines, but most of that is just enhanced by the camera’s merciless eye and I find it barely noticeable with the figure in hand.

bfotroop4

bfotroop5

Articulation is a little different than what we saw in the original Stormtrooper. The arms have rotating hinges at the shoulders, and there’s enough clearance in that socket so that the shoulder armor doesn’t become an issue. The bicep swivels are gone, but the elbows are now rotating hinges instead of double hinges. The wrists are also on rotating hinges. The legs include ball jointed hips, swivels in the thighs, and double hinges in the knees. The ankles have both hinges and lateral rockers. There’s a very generious ball joint in the torso and a ball joint in the neck. I presume the head is removable, but mine is on there pretty good, and I’m not going to force it until I get at least one more.

bfotroop11

bfotroop10

Weapons include a rifle and a pistol sidearm. The rifle looks like the natural evolution of the E-11 Blaster. It’s somewhat similar, but with a more pronounced scope on top and some white added to the deco. The pistol also sports some white paint and almost looks like an adorable super-deformed AR-15. There’s a tab slot on his right thigh and either weapon can be pegged there when not in use.

bfotroop8

bfotroop9

bfotroop12

I’ll confess that this new Stormtrooper was my most anticipated figure of this assortment and I’m happy to say he didn’t disappoint. The plastic feels great, the joints are all strong and serviceable and he just looks outstanding. There are definitely going to be at least two more of these guys in my future and I’m looking forward to the variant armors like the Flametrooper and Snowtroopers. To be honest, if he wasn’t so hard to find in the wake of Force Friday, I’d probably have a squad of First Order Troopers already.

bfotroop13

bfotroop14

Naturally, you can expect to see more Force Awakens toys here in the weeks ahead. I’m on board for all the 6-inch Black figures and already have the second wave pre-ordered. I would have picked up some of the 3 3/4″ figures, but they appear to be in short supply, which is rather interesting to me since collectors were so down on the 5POA style. Could it be? Perhaps kids are actually getting those figures? Wouldn’t that be something!

Star Wars Black (The Force Awakens): Kylo Ren by Hasbro

So far this week, I’ve looked at a pair of the good guys from the new Star Wars flick and since Hasbro conveniently split this wave into two heroes and two villains, it’s time to turn to the baddies. Pressing on into day three of Force Awakens Week brings us to the mysterious villain of the new film, Kylo Ren.

swbren1

There’s the snazzy new Star Wars Black packaging, which I seriously hope is going to be retained for the Classic Star Wars characters whenever Hasbro gets back to doing them. Again, the back panel has a little teaser blurb about Kylo Ren and we’ve had a few other snippets drop into our laps through the Internets. Disney seem to be making a bit deal out of the fact that he’s not a Sith Lord and it sounds to me like he’s going to be more of a hands-on kind of Field Commander of some kind. I like that idea a lot and all I can hope is that he turns out better than Darth Maul… blah!

swbren3

What’s this? A dark, cloaked and masked villain in a Star Wars movie? Outrageous! I jest, of course, because I’m perfectly fine with this new Star Wars film looking to pop in an obvious Vader substitute. I’ll also say that I really dig the design of this guy’s outfit, even if there isn’t a whole lot that’s terribly original about it. On the surface, you basically just get a wide belt and a lot of flowing black robes. His arms are sculpted to look like they’re wrapped up, or the sleeves are just segmented.

swbren4

I think this is easily Hasbro’s best attempt thus far at integrating softgoods into this 6-inch scale, although so far there hasn’t been much competition for such accolades. The material they used for Ren’s cloak is fantastic and flows about the figure splendidly. Even the hood looks perfect. I also dig that they layered the cloak with sculpted plastic “cloth” under it as well as the shoulder wrap. The combination gives the figure a lot of interesting depth and allowed for a very specific look to the tattered shoulder piece that probably couldn’t have been achieved as well with actual cloth material. And when I view this guy from the back, I can’t help but hear him hiss, “Bagginssssss!”

swbren5

swbren6

Kylo’s mask is nicely sculpted and the silver paint offers just the right little bit of flourish to what is otherwise an almost entirely black figure. It’s worth pointing out that the silver looks like it was just sprayed on and not terribly precisely. I wonder if that mask is ever going to come off in the movie. I’d dig it if he slowly removed it only to find it was Ricardo Montalban. You see, kids, before Cumberbatch there was another… ah, forget it. Never-mind. The mask design is cool enough, but there’s nothing about it that suggests it’s likely to become as iconic as Vader’s.

swbren2

With a heaping helping of plastic sculpted robes under those cloth robes, one might expect Kylo’s legs to be rendered useless, but I’m happy to report that isn’t the case. Unlike poor Rey, Kylo Ren has full range of motion in all his points of articulation. The arms have rotating hinges at the shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The legs are ball jointed at the hips, have swivels in the thighs, and double hinges at the knees. The ankles feature hinges and lateral rockers. It feels like there’s a ball joint buried in the torso and I’m not sure what’s going on in the neck, but he can at least turn his head side to side.

Kylo comes with one accessory, and that’s his controversial cross-hilted light saber. The hilt and blade are two separate pieces, and while I wasn’t expecting it, you can indeed remove the blade to display him with the weapon ignited or switched off. To make that work, Hasbro had to take a little liberty with the blade effect, by connecting the blade to the cross-guard and I have to say, I like the way this looks better than the actual onscreen design. By connecting the cross-guard to the blade, it just looks less gimmicky to me. I don’t see anyway to have him wear the hilt, but who knows? Maybe there’s a reason for that.

Kylo Ren is not only my favorite figure of this assortment so far, but he may be my favorite figure of the 6-inch Black line to date. Besides the cool, totally bad ass, character design, this figure exhibits the nearly flawless blending of plastic and cloth that I was hoping to see more of in these larger scale figures. And the articulation is the kind that makes me not want to stop playing with him. I don’t think the cloth robes could have been as effectively executed on a 3 3/4″ figure and right there this figure passes my litmus test in justifying the existence of this scale. On every count, I consider this one a homerun. Tomorrow, I’ll wrap up this themed week with a look at the First Order Stormtrooper.

Star Wars Black (The Force Awakens): Rey and BB-8 (Jakku) by Hasbro

It’s day two of Force Awakens Week and today I’m checking out the second figure of the 6-inch Black line, or should I say figures, plural, because Rey also comes with that damn volleyball that everybody seems to be so smitten with, BB-8.

swbrey1

I just talked about the packaging yesterday, so I’m not going to dwell on it, other then say again that I love the changes they’ve made to the deco. The blurb on the back doesn’t give us a lot more insight into who Rey is, although I’m going to assume she bumps into Finn and gets swept up in the adventure.

swbrey2

swbrey3

Rey comes clad in her garb native to the desert planet of Jakku. I like the fact that we’re revisiting a desert world because by now that’s just a big part of Star Wars imagery. I’m also glad it isn’t Tatoooine again, because I think that planet has been overused enough and risks making Star Wars too parochial in its scope. Hasbro went for all plastic here, rather then adding softgoods. While I’ve bemoaned the lack of softgoods robes in the past, I think they made the right choice here and overall I think Rey’s desert wraps looks quite good. The layers are convincing and you get to see a little leg between the bottom of her robes and the her little boots. She’s also sporting a satchel on the side of her belt.

swbrey5

swbrey6

I’m sure I’m not alone when I admit that I happen to think Daisy Ridley is just aggressively cute. She also happens to look especially captivating in some of those stills from the trailer. She’s got an amazing range exhibited by her intense presence in the trailers to seeing her exuberant smile in the behind the scenes clips. Can Hasbro possibly capture all that attractiveness in the portrait of a 6-inch scale figure? No, of course not. It was never going to happen. Now, I will say that I’ve seen some really good examples of this noggin and some bad ones and I probably got a middle of the road example. I’ll also say that this is a figure that looks better in person. The rouge on her cheeks isn’t as apparent and her eyes are better defined. There’s a decent determined expression there, a little bit of likeness and at least the paint on mine is pretty clean and straight. The three ponytails are pretty wild, but I don’t suspect they’ll replace the Leia Buns in the annals of iconic sci-fi hair style. Whatever the case, I wouldn’t call this a great portrait, but I suppose it could have been worse. Just ask Carrie Fischer about that.

swbrey4

swbrey7

Rey’s articulation is decent on paper, but runs into some classic issues vis-a-vis those sculpted robes. The arms have rotating hinges in the shoulders, elbows, and wrists, and all is fine and dandy there. The legs are ball jointed at the hips, have rotating hinges in the knees, and both hinges and lateral rockers in the ankles. There’s a ball joint at the waist and the neck has both a ball joint and the hinge. You’ve probably guessed the problem here, the hips don’t have a lot of movement and that’s a shame. I can’t quite get her into a running pose, but maybe a trot.

swbrey9

As far as accessories go, Rey comes with a staff thing, which may be a gun or a stun rod or some other spacey thing. Then again, it may just be a pole. There’s some nice detail sculpted in there along with painted wraps and a sling. Oh yeah, there’s one more accessory…

swbrey11

This thing, BB-8! This ridiculous ball of cute has really taken people by storm and if my Twitter feed is any indication, the various plastic versions of this goofball are the better selling pieces of Star Wars tat. I wasn’t a fan when I first saw him, but he’s growing on me and I’m reserving final judgement until I see him in action.

swbrey12

swbrey13

swbrey14

As for his figure, this thing is remarkably well done. All the detail in the body and head is actually sculpted in and the paint, especially on the head, features a great weathered look. The head can turn and it’s posted on a ball joint, so you can shift it any direction. The whole figure is weighted so that if you’re patient you can get it to sit in a number of different… um, poses, by adjusting the head as a counterbalance. I guess the real question is, why did we get him with Rey and not with Poe Dameron?

swbrey8

swbrey10

swbrey15

I expected Rey to be a total dud, but I’m actually fairly pleased with this figure. It’s a bummer about the hip articulation being limited, and there’s plenty of room for improvement in the likeness, but overall she’s still better than I expected. I guess, there’s something to be said for low expectations. I’m hoping we get her in other outfits… assuming she wears others in the film. BB-8, on the other hand is just a little plastic ball of cute. And with the hero portion of this assortment wrapped up, I’ll say that I’m excited to get Poe in hand and I’m still hoping for a geriatric Han Solo. Tomorrow, we turn to The Dark Side and take a look at Kylo Ren!

Star Wars Black (The Force Awakens): Finn (Jakku) by Hasbro

Folks, we’re a little more than three months away from a brand new Star Wars movie and we already have action figures on the shelves! I’m very happy to see that Hasbro is continuing the 6-inch Black Series with characters from The Force Awakens, because it’s really the only Star Wars merch that I’m collecting with any gusto. Today I’m looking at the very first figure in the series and new film protagonist, Finn. But first, let’s check out some brand new package design!

tfafinn1

I’ve made no bones about it, I’m not a big fan of the Star Wars Black packaging. It’s serviceable, but really boring. This new stuff, on the other hand, is pretty snazzy. Sure, the box is still mostly black, but adds a red side panel with the figure’s name and number to spice things up a bit. The diagonal cut on the front with the character art is nice and the red background really makes things pop. You also get a good look at the figure inside, and in this case, I’m looking at a gun that is sadly being warped by the way it’s been fitted into the tray.

tfafinn2

We get a little blurb about Finn on the back of the box, but not much in the way of reveals. I think it’s safe to assume that he is a First Order Stormtrooper who sees the light and joins the Resistance. Or maybe not. But, if that proves to be true, I think it would be pretty cool. Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing what John Boyega has in store for us.

tfafinn3

As the package tells us, this is Finn from the part of the film that will take place on the desert planet of Jakku. He’s wearing a black shirt and trousers, which… maybe could be the undergarment one would wear while wearing Stormtrooper armor? Mmm? Maybe? Wow, it’s going to be fun to re-read these speculative reviews after the movie has come out. Apart from that he’s got a jacket on that at first I thought might look a lot like Luke’s Yavin Celebration jacket, but on closer inspection… nope, not really. I was just reaching on that one. I will, however, note that we’ve already seen images of fellow protagonist and Resistance pilot, Poe Dameron wearing this same style jacket.

tfafinn4

The sculpting on the outfit is very nicely done. The shirt is textured and you get plenty of wrinkles and stitching on the pants. The jacket is the usual vest with sculpted sleeves and in this case the illusion works very well. Detail on the jacket is a little soft, but you still get plenty going on there with rumples, pockets, a red shoulder pad, and some sort of badge or insignia bar on the left breast.

tfafinn5

The portrait is a fairly good likeness, although a bit soft. I was a little concerned about the pictures, which showed the eyes painted to always be looking up. They are indeed like that, but it doesn’t bother me so much with the figure in hand. Finn has a pretty serious expression, which matches what we’ve seen in the trailer. I think this is going to be a pretty intense character. I’ve seen enough pictures to presume that I will be able to pop off this noggin and pop it onto a First Order Stormtrooper. I guess I’ll know for sure in a few days when I open up the Stormy. Otherwise, you don’t get a whole lot of paint on this figure, rather mostly colored plastic. There’s a light tan spray on his boots and pants cuffs to suggest he’s been tromping around in the sand.

tfafinn7

tfafinn6

Finn’s articulation is similar to what we’ve been seeing in this line. The arms have rotating hinges in the shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The legs are ball jointed at the hips, double hinged at the knees, and have swivels in the thighs. The ankles are hinged and have lateral rockers. There’s a ball joint in the torso and the neck is both hinged and ball jointed. All the joints on this guy feel great and they move like butter right out of the package. They’re also strong enough to hold him in a number of action poses.

tfafinn10

tfafinn8

tfafinn9

Finn comes with one accessory, his gun, and frankly I don’t know what to make of this thing. It’s oversized in a kind of goofy Power of the Force 2 kind of way. The silver cone barrel reminds me a bit of the blasters used by the Rebels in A New Hope, but otherwise it doesn’t strike me as a very Star Wars-y weapon. It’s also almost the exact same color as his coat and I’ll be surprised if the gun is actually in the film and if it turns out to be this color. It feels like that was just the plastic they were already using so they kept it. It has a black paint wash, but still matches his jacket pretty closely. And yes, it did warp a bit in the package giving it a slightly droopy barrel.

tfafinn12

tfafinn11

For a line that has been all over the place in terms of quality, I have to say that Finn here is one of the better releases. He sports a solid sculpt and great articulation, and apart from some issues with the gun, I’ve got zero complaints. He may not be terribly exciting right now, as he’s just a guy we don’t know wearing a coat, but that’ll all change in three short months. Tomorrow, the speculation continues with a look at Rey and BB-8!
