The Flash (TV Series): The Flash and Captain Cold by DC Collectibles

Network TV… I ain’t got time for that shit! Of course, I watched the pilot of The Flash way back when and liked it quite a bit, but getting me to make an appointment to watch TV each week? That’s just not going to happen. Bundle up the whole season on Netflix, though, and I’m on board. So, yeah, I just finished watching the inaugural season and I was thoroughly impressed with not only the quality of the show, but the sensibilities that it paid to the DC Comic Universe. Considering getting through most episodes of Arrow has been like pulling teeth for me, I found The Flash’s willingness to pull no punches and jump right into the fray refreshing. Grant Gustin is a fantastic Barry Allen and Wentworth Miller breathed a level of personality into Leonard Snart that I wouldn’t have guessed possible. And guess what? DC Collectibles just released The Flash and Captain Cold in their DC TV-verse action figure line, so let’s check them out.

I haven’t been impressed with much of DC Collectible’s packaging, but they sure did a nice job on these. The figures come in snappy window boxes with an angled edge with the character name running up the edge of the bubble. The side opposite side panels have some fantastic character art, as well as the name of the character and a number for the figure. Whichever way you line these boxes up on your shelf, you’ll be able to see which figure is which. I do wish there was a window on the top flap to light up the figures inside, but these are still a huge improvement over the boxes we’ve been getting.

There’s a giant Flash emblem illustrated on the cardboard behind the tray, which frames the figure nicely. Everything is collector friendly and the large windows grants a great look at the figures inside. The back panel shows an assortment of Arrow figures and while I’m far from sold on that show, chances are I’ll be picking up some of those for the cross-over value. As nice as these boxes are, I fear that I will inevitably have to pitch them because of space limitations, but I’m going to hang onto them as long as I can. Let’s start with Barry…

I loved the design of the TV suit from the very beginning and I appreciate the fact that they wasted no time getting him into it. The design is a great compromise between comic book design and that sense of realism that the movies and TV shows have strives to bestow on these costumed heroes. The attention to detail here is superb and everything from the raised lightning bolt on his chest right down to the gold piping is actually part of the sculpt. The different materials are reflected by texturing and sculpted rumples here and there.

The bulk of the figure’s coloring comes from the deep crimson plastic used for the body and even the fleshtone for the face is bare plastic and looks great. What little paint that’s here is confined to the eyes, the gold piping, and the bright red in the center of his chest emblem. But don’t think that the minimalist use of paint is a shortcoming. It perfectly suits the costume design and the gold is applied with the utmost precision.

DCC has been slowly improving on articulation (and sometimes taking a few steps back), but here they’ve gone all out, at least in terms of actual points. The arms feature rotating hinges in the shoulders and elbows, and hinged swivels in the wrists. The hips appear to be a T-crotch, but feature lateral hinges as well. The legs have double hinged knees, swivels in the thighs and boots, and hinges in the ankles with lateral rockers. There’s a ball joint in the torso and another in the neck. Now, with all that having been said, some of these points are limited in their range. I was a tad disappointed that I couldn’t really get Barry into a proper hunched down running pose with head pointing forward. He can still do some nice stuff, but improved range in the chest joint and the elbows would have gone a long way to making him perfect. Flash comes with fists attached and two extra pairs of hands, one set is relaxed and the other are flattened to mimic how he holds them when he runs.

Moving on to Captain Cold, once again the show did an admirable job giving Snart a “real world” look. He’s sporting some rugged looking pants with knee pads and thigh straps, a textured pull-over, and of course his winter coat with the fur-trimmed hood. Wait, was it blue or brown in the show… I just can’t remember. Weeeeee…. That’s a Star Wars joke, friends!  The coat is the usual soft plastic vest with sculpted sleeves and it looks great on him. I think my only complaint here is that while you can pull back his hood to get a better look at his head sculpt, you can’t put it in a down position. I’m not going to hold it against DCC, though, because I can’t imagine a way they could have pulled that off.

The head sculpt here is a tad soft, but I think the likeness is still solid. He’s wearing his blue tinted goggles and if you pull the hood back, you can see that the entire head is sculpted, even the bits of his hair that are otherwise obscured.

Snart features most of the same points of articulation as Barry. The most conspicuous omission is the lack of any articulation in the torso. Like Barry, the rotating hinges in the elbows are rather limiting, which is a bit more disappointing here, but I’ll bet that coat is made out of Gortex and as George Costanza will attest, Gortex isn’t easy to move around in. My biggest issue with the elbows is that it makes it difficult for Snart to hold his gun across his chest. Difficult, but not impossible.

Speaking of which, Snart obviously comes with his trademark freeze gun and it’s a really nice piece of kit. The sculpt is very detailed and it has a great weathered paint finish. Captain Cold also comes with a total of three pairs of hands: Fists, relaxed hands, and gun-gripping hands so he can dish out the cold as a lefty or righty.

DC Collectibles has put out some great figures over the last year or so, and this pair continues that trend. The sculpt and paint on these figures are top notch and apart from wishing the elbows (and Flash’s torso) had a greater range of motion, I’ve got nothing but praise. It’s nice to see that they’re paying homage to the DC TV Universe and I sincerely hope they sell well, because I’d probably going to be all in on this line. Well, except for Iris, she’s terrible. Now, if Wave 2 consisted of her dad and Reverse Flash? Yes, please!

Justice League: “New 52” Pandora by DC Collectibles

It’s Saturday, but since I missed posting yesterday, I’ll continue to be faithful to the spirit of DC Friday as I attempt to work my way through the stacks and stacks of DC related figures and statues that have been piling up here. Today I’m checking out Pandora, the mysterious lass who haunted much of the New 52 until her mystery was finally revealed in Trinity War. Part of the Trinity of Sin, she, along with The Question and Phantom Stranger, was cursed to walk the Earth for eternity. I really liked the build up to this story, but the pay off was certainly disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, I love me the Crime Syndicate, but this was a real strange way to facilitate their return. Still, it certainly was a surprise.

Anywho… Pandora comes in the usual DCC window box. It’s white with the purple slash on the front and pretty bland. The top flap features the Justice League logo at the top and the window gives you a pretty good look at the figure in case you want to check her for paint quality. Everything is collector friendly and you even get an extended back with a J-hook if you want to swing it on a peg.

Even if I wasn’t intrigued by Pandora from the beginning, I’d like to think that I would still get a kick out of this figure because she looks fantastic. I get a major Dante vibe off of her, you know from Devil May Cry? I think it’s the design of the outfit. The sculpted detail on the costume is excellent, from the button down flap on her tunic to the laces on her high top boots and all the little wrinkles and rumples. The outfit is comprised of layers of very soft plastic, which include the lower flaps of her jacket and the outer cloak.

The cloak bellows out nicely, which allows for a windblown look if she’s standing at ease, but also facilitates some of those action poses. It doesn’t feel at all restrictive. There’s some great texturing in it as well as all the little sculpted stitches. When it comes to paint, Pandora’s outfit doesn’t offer a lot of colors to work with here, but the maroon is certainly faithful to the design and there’s a great black wash to help pick out all the little details.

The head sculpt is also top notch and has some crisp paint to back it up. Pandora sports pupil-less eyes, purple hair and mascara, and her jagged scars on her cheeks. The portrait is rounded out with some high gloss paint for her lips. The hood is technically removable, but the head isn’t completely sculpted in the back, so you’ll want to leave it on.

The articulation here is solid for a DCC figure. The arms have rotating hinges in the shoulders, hinges in the elbows, and swivels in the wrists. The legs feature a T-crotch in the hips, hinges in the knees, and swivels at the tops of her boots. There’s no articulation in the torso, although she does have decent neck articulation, thanks to the hood being separate from the cloak. The only thing I’m really missing here is some lateral movement in the hips. All the joints on my figure were fine right out of the package with no fears of sticking or breakage.

Of course, Pandora comes with her twin automatic pistols, supplied by Marcus Kincaid. She can wield them in both hands and they can also be worn in the functional holsters attached to her thighs. Beyond being decent sculpts, there’s actually some painted detail to the grips and the blue on the sides.

And last but not least you get Pandora’s Box, which is a particularly nice little bit of sculpt right down to it’s three little eyes. Hmm, three… I wonder what that could signify? Yeah, too bad after all that drama it just turned out to be a gateway to Earth 3. I was expecting more.

Who doesn’t dig a mysterious chick in a bad-ass cloak toting dual handguns? Pandora was a cool story hook and a damn cool character who had me intrigued from the get-go. And I’m very happy to say that DC Collectibles did her proud with this figure. She looks amazing, and while I would have liked her to be a tad more limber, she still ranks up there as one of my favorite figures in DCC’s New 52 line up. The fact that she can be had now for about $12? All the better!

DC Comics Super-Villains: “New 52” Poison Ivy by DC Collectibles

In case you haven’t been checking in on FFZ Fridays lately, I’m doing this whole DC Comics thing, at least until I can get through my backlog of figures and statues, which at this rate will probably take a couple of months. Today I’m looking at another recent release in DC Collectibles’ Super-Villains line, that vixen of vegetation, Poison Ivy.

The packaging consists of the same old window box with the extended back and J-hook so you can swing it on a peg or stand it on the shelf. The villains series features a black box, as opposed to the usual white boxes and the swipe across the front and band on the back are both green, presumably to satiate Ivy’s thirst for chlorophyll. You do get a shot of the figure on the side panel in case you want to line up these packages on a bookshelf, which is always a plus for me, but with space limitations being what they are, I just throw these boxes out.

Call me sacrilegious, but I’ve been mostly OK with the “New 52” character designs, although that’s not the case with Poison Ivy. I find her black leotard covered with greenery to raise too many questions. Does she put on the bodysuit first and then grow the plants on top of it? Are the plants just artificial and part of the costume? And why black? How does that in any way fit the whole plant motif? It’s just a weird design and I’m not sure where the designers were going with it. Why go with this when you can go with something like this. With that having been said, this figure comes as close as possible to selling it to me and that’s thanks to some really solid sculpting and paintwork.

The figure features Ivy’s shapely bod cast in black plastic and with sculpted vines and leaves scattered about in patches. Because she’s wearing a leotard, the placement of the leaves doesn’t have to be as strategic as past versions of the character, but even still I don’t get why they left one breast uncovered. I love how all the greenery is actually part of the sculpt and the paint on the vines and some of the individual leaves is fairly neatly applied. DCC could have easily done a lot of the vines with just paint, so I applaud them going the extra mile.

DCC has delivered on some rather attractive female portraits in this line and that continues to be the case with Ivy here. She’s not only beautiful, but she’s easily recognizable from the panel art, and that’s something that’s not always easy to do when going from 2D art to a fully realized 3D figure. The paint on her eyes and lips is rather tight, as is are the black vines on her cheeks. Wait, black suit with green vines, but black vines on… nah, nevermind. The sculpted hair is equally impressive. It’s a light brown with an effective wash and bits of leaves scattered throughout.

Ivy has a fair number of articulation points. The arms have rotating hinges at the shoulders and hinges in the elbows, swivels in the biceps, but sadly no swivels in the wrists. The legs are ball jointed at the hips, hinged at the knees and ankles, and have swivels in the thighs. There’s no torso articulation, but her neck is ball jointed. But even with all these strategic points, Ivy isn’t a terribly limber figure. The range of movement in the shoulders and hips is pretty limited and the hair renders the neck joint almost useless. No matter how hard I try, I can’t really get any decent poses out of her and while I haven’t had any problems with her joints, I’m not about to risk stressing them.

While definitely not my preferred look for Poison Ivy, this is still a solidly crafted figure. The only real gripe I have here is with the articulation and again, it’s not because the points aren’t there, but rather few of them have any real range of motion, making Poison Ivy one of those figures that is best just standing on the shelf and looking nice. And of course, people who have been collecting DCC and DC Direct for a while won’t be bothered so much by limitations in the articulation. At the original $20, I’ve had this figure in my hand a couple of times and always put her back, but with so many DCC figures hitting the clearance bins these days, I took a second look and at $13, I found I couldn’t resist.

DC Comics Super-Villains: (Brooklyn Bruisers) Harley Quinn by DC Collectibles

With Mondays being all about Marvel, it seems only right to be book-ending the weeks with DC Fridays and that’s exactly what I’ll continue to do until my backlog of DC figures and statues dries up. Today I’m checking out another of DCC’s Super-Villains assortment, which happens to be a new version of Harley Quinn. This Harley is ripped straight from the pages of her self-titled comic, which is a book that I am constantly asking myself why I’m reading. It has it’s moments, but all in all I just don’t think it’s very good. Most of the time it just feels like Harley is just screaming, “Look at me, I could be Deadpool, too! I can break the fourth wall and get into wacky adventures!” Sure. OK.

We’ve seen the DCC packaging here at least a dozen times and the only real difference here is they’ve gone with a black box and in this case a read swipe across the front. It’s a lot more exciting than the plain white, so let’s give credit where credit is due. The window gives you a great look at the figure, and in this case all the stuff that comes with her. In her book, Harley inherits a building in NY and takes some jobs to pay expenses. Yeah, this is what they came up with for Harley’s solo comic. One of those jobs is with the Brooklyn Bruisers Roller Derby Team, which sounds like it has promise, but barely gets any panel time.

My reaction to the comic may be tepid, but I know an outstanding figure when I see one, and boy is this it! I’m probably one of the few people out there that digs Harley’s New 52 whorish look and here it’s perfectly adapted to the Roller Derby circuit. Everything is sculpted with such loving detail from the laces and pompoms on her shoes to the knitted texture of her socks and the adorable little bells on her choker collar. Even the laces on the back of her top are individually sculpted. Her belt includes a brace of sculpted bullets and she has a functional holster for her automatic pistol. The paint on the figure has the chops to back up the magnificent sculpt. The high gloss used for her outfit is stunning and contrasts beautifully with her pale white skin. What’s more the paint is just about immaculate. There’s hardly any slop or bleeding to speak of.

As for the portrait, well the art in the book is kind of all over the place. I generally like Chad Hardin’s style, but it tends to run from mature to hyper cutesy and in this case we got the later, while I would have preferred the former. Still, the head sculpt certainly matches that particular aspect of the panel art and in that sense it’s a great sculpt and I’m not going to quibble over what is still a great figure.

In terms of articulation, Harley’s got a lot of points in the right places and fares better than some of the other recent DCC figures I’ve looked at. Her arms have rotating hinges in the shoulders, hinges in the elbows, and swivels in the biceps and wrists. The shoulder armor is hinged to improve the articulation and I don’t have any problems with them popping off like I did with Starfire’s. The legs are ball jointed at the hips, hinged at the knees, and have swivels in the ankles. The hip joints are a little more restrictive than I would like. There’s no articulation in the torso, which I’m actually OK with because it would have probably marred the sculpt, but she does have a ball joint in the neck.

I don’t usually expect a lot of accessories with my DC Collectibles figures, but in this case Harley hit the jackpot. For starters,  you get her giant hammer. In this case it’s painted with a metallic red and it’s light enough to allow Harley to wield it quite well while not losing her balance.

Next up you get her automatic pistol. The sidearm fits into the holster on her belt and she can hold it in her right hand.

Lastly, and certainly not least, she comes with her roller skates. These are wonderful little pieces, which peg into the bottoms of her feet and feature spinning wheels. I’m impressed by how well they work with the figure and they really show off her beautiful balance.

I can’t say enough good things about this new Harley Quinn. Sure, the comic might be a bumpy ride, but I’m so very glad that DCC seized the opportunity to make this figure. She looks amazing and thanks to her awesome roller skates and some superb balance, she’s ridiculously fun to play with. That’s saying a lot for a line that is more aimed at being collectibles rather than toys and meant to be placed on the shelf and admired. Like most DCC figures, Harley retails at around $20 and she’s worth every last penny of that, but I was able to grab her for about $16 and I ain’t complaining.

DC Comics Super-Villains: “New 52” Joker by DC Collectibles

Those that know me, know that I don’t get really deep into Batman’s comics. I do, however, try to read the collections that revolve around important story arcs. That’s what dragged me into finally reading “Death of the Family” and I found myself thoroughly enjoying it. Conversely, I’ve only really been collecting the DCC figures related to the books I’ve been reading, so naturally The Joker now had to be on that list. This figure has actually been on my want list for a while and when he turned up on clearance at an online retailer, I tossed him in my virtual basket, along with a bunch of other “New 52” figures I was still missing.

The package is the same style window box as we’ve been seeing from DCC all along, complete with extended back and J-hook. In this case, however, they did switch up the deco quite a bit. Instead of the white box with purple swipe down the front, we get black and green. I presume the black is for evil and the green is Joker’s hair? I dig this more than the normal boxes, but I’d still like to see some character art or something more comic-book-y. Everything is collector friendly, but I don’t keep these boxes.

And here he is out of the package and he looks great! If you need any proof as to how unswervingly popular the Joker has been as a character over the decades, you need only look at the ridiculous number of ways he’s been depicted over the years. He’s had so many different looks that it’s hard to keep track of them all and this incarnation, after his face had a run in with The Dollmaker, is one that goes for shock value. To be more specific, this figure is based on Joker after he has returned to Gotham and reclaimed his face and is basically wearing it as a mask. I gotta tell you, I dig this look and DCC did a wonderful job bringing it to life in action figure form.

We might as well start with the portrait, because… damn! All the little staples and hooks holding the face on are realized in the sculpt and neatly painted, while the face itself shows the macabre wrinkles and stretch marks. Around the border you can see the reddish-brown exposed muscle and I love how deep the eyes are set into the sculpt. The detail in the teeth is also impressive and the whole thing is topped off nicely by his tuft of green hair. You could argue that a lot of DCC’s subject matter doesn’t give them the opportunity to strut their stuff as much as this guy does, but they sure stepped up when that opportunity arrived. Bravo!

The outfit consists of mechanic’s overalls from Joe’s Garage, which includes a convincing amount of sculpted rumples and wrinkles. I dig the oversized work gloves and the sculpted laces on the boots. The real star of the outfit, however, is the tool belt, which not only includes a bunch of sculpted tools, but places to store some of his extra accessories.

The articulation here is very good for a DCC figure. That may sound like a loaded compliment, but it isn’t meant to be. Sure, apart from the waist swivel, there’s no articulation in the torso, but everything else here is plenty serviceable. The arms have rotating hinges in the shoulders, hinges in the elbows, and swivels in the biceps and wrists. The legs feature a T-crotch at the hips (probably the most disappointing thing about the figure), hinges in the knees, and swivels in the ankles. The head rests on a generous ball joint. All the joints were fine right out of the package, and nothing feels like its in danger of snapping.

DC Collectibles isn’t big on accessories with their figures, but Joker hit the jackpot. He comes with four implements of torture and murder in the form of everyday tools. You get a hammer and a wrench, both of which can be stowed in the loops on his belt. You get a pair of needle nose pliers, identical to the ones sculpted into his back pouch. And finally, you get a nasty looking serrated knife.

This figure is outstanding on just about every level. The sculpt and paint are both top notch and if we’re grading articulation on a curve, even that is better than your average DCC figure. I would have been perfectly happy picking him up at the MSRP of $20, but grabbing him for $13 was all the more sweeter. He is easily my favorite DCC figure standing in my display at the moment, and that’s saying quite a bit because as I said, I’m pretty selective about the Batman books that I read. But hell, I like this figure so much, I’ll probably go scoop up DCC’s Trinity set so I can have a proper DCC “New 52” Batman to go with him. Next Friday I’ll keep this DC Collectibles train rolling along with a look at a brand new Harley Quinn figure.

Justice League Dark: Constantine by DC Collectibles

Since Force Awakens took up a lot of the week, I thought I’d toss out a bonus feature today. Last week I checked out Zatanna from the Justice League Dark comic and as promised I’m back now to check out Constantine. I’m really pushing through the “To Read” comic stacks on my nightstand, and I’m going to be getting back to this one soon enough, but based on the dozen or so issues that I’ve read so far, it’s a book that I really dig. I’m a big fan of Mattel’s Signature Collection Constantine figure, so I’m interested to see how this one will stack up.

I still think that DCC’s packaging for these figures is pretty “meh.” It’s a simple window box with an extended back equipped with a J-hook. It’s bland and not very exciting, but at the very least it does show the figure off quite well and it is totally collector friendly. I guess that’s something. Also, I don’t feel obligated to keep it.

While I’ve had some differences with Zatanna’s wardrobe in this book, Constantine’s classic look survived the transition to the New 52. He’s still wearing his trusty long brown duster, collared shirt and disheveled necktie, all of which is wonderfully reproduced here for the figure. The coat is the usual vest with sculpted sleeves trick and I think this is one of the better executed examples of that.

The coat is sculpted to splay out at the bottom and it’s cast in very pliable plastic, so it doesn’t impede leg articulation at all. The sleeve on his watch arm is rolled up and the other extends to his wrist. I really dig how the ends of the belt hang off the coat. It adds a lot of credibility to the sculpt. The same goes for the collar, lapels, and the necktie. I can’t come up with a single quibble about Constantine’s outfit. It’s just perfect.

The portrait, on the other hand, gives me mixed feelings. It reminds me of a young, anime-style David Bowie and considering the design history of the character, that’s right on target. This is, of course, the New 52 version, and the characters are supposed to be younger and that’s definitely reflected here, although even in the comic he tends to have some stubble, which is the main place where this portrait is at odds with the character art. The crazy eyes also make him look like a crank junkie. All in all, I prefer the Mattel portrait, but this one is certainly interesting.

Articulation here is serviceable, but there are a couple things missing that I would have liked to see. The arms have rotating hinges in the shoulders and elbows, but sadly there are no wrists swivels. That was a gripe I had with the Zatanna figure too. The legs are ball jointed at the hips and knees, but there’s no ankle articulation. There’s no articulation at all in the torso, not even a waist swivel, but the neck is ball jointed. In hand, the figure is still fun to play with, but it could have been better with just a few added points. At least the joints all feel good, with nothing stuck or fragile.

No acccessories, but that’s understandable. What were they going to give him, a cigarette? Actually, now that I mention it, two of the fingers on his right hand are individually sculpted and rather flexible. I imagine I could make a ciggy out of some rolled up paper and tuck it in there. He does at least have a nicely sculpted wrist watch.

I like this figure a lot. It nails the outfit perfectly and while the portrait is a bit weird, it’s certainly got a lot of personality that lends itself to the character. Somewhere between the Signature Collection version and this one, there’s probably a perfect figure to be had. Either way, it’s nice to have a current version of Hellblazer to stand beside my Zatanna. Sadly, DCC didn’t venture much further into Justice League Dark when it comes to figures. There’s no Deadman or Madam Xanadu. They did, however, produce figures of Pandora and Swamp Thing, both of which I’ll be getting to eventually.

DC Mages, Mystics & Magicians: Zatanna by DC Direct

Who’s up for a bonus Saturday feature, eh? Yesterday, I checked out DC Direct’s recent New 52 release of Zatanna and I realized that I had another Zatanna figure still hanging on my Toy Closet wall that was just begging to be opened, so I thought I’d make it a Zatanna double feature. I picked up this figure many months ago in a comic shop. They had a tote on the floor full of carded figures, and while I was super excited when I started digging, this was literally the only thing that I found that was even remotely interesting. I had hoped the whole MM&M series was in there, but no such luck. It would have been nice to have scored a Dr. Fate.

I can’t say I’m all that fond of the packaging. It’s a HUGE bland gray card and about the only things that stand out for me is the rather nice logo they used for Zatanna’s name and the fact that the window shows off the figure so well. Still, there’s no reason for the card to be so bloody big and have so much empty space in that bubble, especially when you aren’t going to invest in some nice artwork. Despite being from 2000, the back of this package is soooo dated. Yeah, I realize it was fifteen years ago, I just don’t want to admit it. You do get a nice little blurb about Zatanna and some shots of other DC Direct figures from that time. Holy shit, check out that Starfire! She looks crazy! I may have to hunt that one down. Anyway, this is one instance where I don’t mind shredding a 15 year old sealed package to get at a figure. Ah, who am I kidding, I hardly ever feel bad about opening toys.

Besides my general love for Zatanna, what caught my eye about this figure was her costume. This is definitely 60’s era Zatanna, which was a fun and crazy time for her, at least according to the few encounters I’ve had with her from that era. She’s still all about coat tails and fishnets, but her top hat and coat are blue instead of black, she sports a white blouse and bowtie, a yellow vest and gray skirt. I’ve got to say for an earlier DC Direct figure, the paintwork on this figure is pretty damn good. There’s not much in the way of slop or bleeding. The fishnets are real fishnets and while things get a little f’ugly when viewed from behind, I think they’re executed a hell of a lot better than Mattel’s DCUC Zatanna.

The portrait here is passable. Again, it’s very 60’s stylized from the hair to the makeup. The paint is solid work and her top hat is sculpted as part of the head so you can’t remove it.

The package claims this is a “fully poseable action figure” to which Zatanna would say: “TIHSLLUB!” I know, this is DC Direct and I shouldn’t expect much, but then don’t put it on the package. As is often the case most of the useful articulation is above the waist where she has rotating cuts in her shoulders, hinges in her elbows, and swivels in the wrists. The legs have swivels at the thighs but with the way they’re cut, they’re completely useless. Also, because of the way her legs are sculpted, it’s pretty tough to get her to stand.

Fortunately, she does come with a figure stand, and it’s pretty spiffy. It’s a compact little black oval base with an actual name plate on the front that reads, “Zatanna Mistress of Magic.” I love this thing, it’s like a mini base from a Hot Toys stand. On the downside, I had to dig out the peg hole in her right foot to get it to go in.

I like this figure a lot. In fact, I’m actually surprised at how much I like it. The articulation is a bummer, but it’s not unexpected considering who made her and when she was made. Still, I’m stoked to have an example of Zatanna in this costume for my shelf and all in all the sculpt and paintwork here are not bad at all. Hell, Mattel could have even learned a thing or two about how they did the fishnets. Speaking of which, while I had the gals out, I also re-shot two of my previous Zatanna Features, so feel free to check out Mattel’s DCUC version as well as another DC Direct release, this time from the Identity Crisis comic book.

Justice League Dark: Zatanna by DC Collectibles

I’m pretty bummed about how little time I make for reading comics these days. Case in point, deep within the sizeable pile of TPBs I need to get through are a couple dozen issues of Justice League Dark. I started reading this book entirely for Constantine and Zatanna and I’ve been pretty pleased with it, at least with as far as I’ve gotten, so it was a no brainer that I would go in for some of the figures when DCC released them.

We’ve seen this packaging before. Zatanna comes in a window box with an extended J-hook back so that it’s right at home hanging on a peg or sitting on a shelf. You get that same dull, white package that one would not expect from a company that butters its bread through the graphic arts. That’s fine, because despite being collector friendly, I’m going to shred the hell out of it to get to my figure.

I’ve been up and down on my feelings for Zatanna’s New 52 costume. I hated her look when the comic started, especially when other characters got to more or less keep their iconic appearance. Eventually they settled on the look that we got with this figure and while it will never replace the old style costumes, I’m OK with it because it hits enough familiar points. Yeah, the top hat is gone, but she’s still got the little one-piece with the coat tails, you get a little bit of fishnets and the super high over the knee boots. The whole package is roundedo ut by a nice pliable plastic cape.

Everything about Zatanna’s outfit is executed splendidly. Maybe there’s a little bleed through under the white paint, but it’s nothing too bad. The fishnets are simply printed onto the plastic, and I’m perfectly fine with that considering some of the f’ugly attempts we’ve seen at DC characters wearing fishnet stockings in this scale before. Her hands are sculpted into pretty typical hocus-pocus kind of poses. My only real complaint here is that while her high heeled boots look great, there are no peg holes in the bottoms of her feet and she is extremely difficult to stand. Hey, DCC. You just sold me a pack of figure stands for this line. Why would you not put holes in the feet of the one figure that refuses to stand up? Sheesh!

The portrait is excellent. DCC has been doing a bang up job with their head sculpts in this line, especially the ladies, and Zatanna is no different. She’s pretty and she matches the character art from the book quite nicely. What’s more the paint is all crisp and clean and the bare plastic they used for her flesh tone looks great.

Articulation is one area where DCC has been constantly improving. I’ve been overall impressed with what I’ve seen lately, especially with the Suicide Squad figures. Alas, Zatanna here takes a bunch of steps back. Here’s what you get… The arms have rotating hinges in the shoulders and hinges in the elbows. That’s it! The lack of swivels in the shoulders is bad enough, but the lack of swivels in the wrists is unacceptable to me, especially given the way they’re sculpted. If you want them palms down, you have to turn the arm at the shoulder socket, which is awkward.

The legs are much better with ball joints at the hips, hinges in the knees and ankles, and swivels at the tops of the boots. There’s no torso articulation, which was probably sacrificed for the sculpt, and the neck is ball jointed, but severly impeded by the hair sculpt. I didn’t have any problems with stock joints, which was a pleasant surprise as I’m still mourning the loss of my Starfire, who’s arm snapped right at the shoulder.

I picked up Zatanna at a pretty deep discount and only paid $13.99 for her versus the regular twenty bucks or so. As a result, I’m willing to be a bit more forgiving. She’s a fantastic looking figure that manages to sell me even a little more on this costume, but seemingly little things like the lack of wrist swivels and no peg holes in the feet take their toll on my enjoyment of this piece. I’ll probably revisit this series next week to look at Constantine, but until then come on back tomorrow and I’ll throw out some more Zatanna loving from the likes of DC Direct and Mattel.

Cover Girls of the DC Universe: Huntress by DC Collectibles

It’s been a little while since I last revisited DC’s Cover Girls , but don’t think that I’ve lost interest. This continues to be a line that I keep on the back burner, but it continues to keep my interest with each new one I grab. I’m quite a few releases behind and I’m glad to see that DCC is being so prolific with these ladies. Today, it’s Helena Bertinelli’s turn as we take a look at The Huntress…

I don’t have a lot to say about the box that hasn’t been said already. It’s typical fare for this line and not terribly exciting. It’s an enclosed box that keeps the statue safe between two slabs of styrofoam and there are some pictures of the statue to give you a good idea what you’re getting. The best thing I can say about it is that it’s entirely collector friendly. There’s no assembly required here, as Huntress comes already attached to her stand and ready for display.

I was real iffy on this piece when I first saw the pictures. I absolutely love the character and tend to buy whatever Huntress merch comes my way, but I wasn’t sold on the composition. She’s got a ramrod straight pose going on while taking aim with her crossbow. The Huntress is a fantastically agile and acrobatic young woman and I didn’t feel that this statue really conveyed the sense of energy and action that I associate with her. Then I stepped back a little and considered the overall theme of this line, which is going for something more akin to museum poses mixed with a little personality and I started to warm up to it a bit.

One thing I can’t deny is that this piece accentuates her beautiful curves. With her legs together and her back slightly arched, Helena cuts a lovely figure and the skin tight suit doesn’t leave much to the imagination. And that’s saying something when y ou consider that this is Huntress’ least revealing outfit in recent memory and that she’s literally clothed from head to toe.

The costume is mostly black with the white cross on her torso and white striping down the sides of her legs. You get purple paint on the boots, kneepads, belt, holsters, gauntlets, and shoulder pads. The cape billows out around her and is painted purple on the back and black on the inside with some white trim.There’s something about a black and purple deco that I really dig a lot. Overall, the paint for the costume is pretty good. The lines on the white striping could be a little more crisp in some areas, but nothing too bad.

Huntress dons her trademark crossbow in her right hand with her left hand drawn up to her neck. Again, it’s not a bad pose, just a lot more reserved then what I’m used to seeing with this character.

The portrait is excellent. Her sculpted hair blows off to the sides and strands pass in front of the ears on her mask. Her mask itself looks great and her face is very pretty. While the lines on the uniform may not be quite as crisp as they could have been, the paint on the face is absolutely gorgeous.

When this line rebooted a couple of years ago, DCC was going with individualized scenic bases, but since then they’ve standardized them into simple ovals and I kind of like it. In this case, Huntress’ base is painted black and purple to match the rest of the statue and has a small dagger emblem etched into it. The bottom of the statue features the statue’s number and the limitation of 5200 pieces.

Huntress is the seventh Cover Girls statue in my collection and I’m continuing to enjoy this line quite a bit. While these pieces retail at around $100, I tend to wait until they hit the $70-80 mark before biting and in that case patience usually prevails. I nabbed Huntress here for just a little under $70 and even though I was unconvinced about her pose, she won me over when I got her in hand.

Cover Girls of the DC Universe: Poison Ivy by DC Collectibles

A lot of this week’s Features have involved me revisiting with lines that I’ve been away from for a while, so I might as well keep that theme going with a new Cover Girls statue by DCC. Supergirl was the last time I looked at this line and that was way back in August of last year and I’m only now starting to get caught up. I figured Poison Ivy was the best place to start since I was totally blown away by the photos I’ve seen and have been looking forward to opening up this beauty for a long time. It’s worth noting that this is the second version of Poison Ivy since the reboot of the Cover Girls line. I didn’t care at all for the first one so I was mighty glad to see them take a second crack at her because the result is absolutey exquisite.

I’ve gone on record as being totally unimpressed by the package design DC Collectibles has adopted for this line. It’s mostly white and kind of bland, but it does at least offer you a good photo of the statue and a little blurb about the character on the back. Based soley on the aesthetics, I wouldn’t bother holding on to these boxes at all. However, the box is collector friendly and when combined with the brick of styrofoam inside, it’s a good thing to have if you ever need to store or transport the piece and so I do hang on to these. When you get Ivy out of the styrofoam the only assembly required is attaching the statue to the base via the metal pegs that come out of the bottoms of her feet. It was a little daunting as the holes were just a little too far apart and I had to pull her legs out a bit to get her in. Once the pegs went in, however, all was good and she stands perfectly on the base.

All set up, this statue is drop dead gorgeous. Ivy is caught in a sexy stride with a single rose held seductively in her left hand, at her side, and her right hand pinching at the top of her leafy one-piece. She’s got a pair of thigh high boots and long gloves, both topped with foliage trim. The costume design is pretty simple, but the attention to detail in the leaves is well done and the two shades of green combined with the wonderful skin tone all make for a striking piece. Yum! I certainly dig this look a lot more than the black and green outfit she donned early on in Birds of Prey.

Of course, what’s really striking is the portrait. I’m totally in love with the face sculpt here. It’s so soft and beautiful and perfectly painted that I think it totally transcends what we’ve been seeing in this line so far. Her eyes are perfectly straight and the paint work on her green eye-liner and parted lips is exceptional. Ivy’s breathtaking face is framed by her lush red hair, which is peppered with leaves and cascades down her back. It’s all simply stunning.

And it would be impossible to discuss this statue without talking boobs. Of course, all of the Cover Girls statues are sexualized to some degree, so boobs are certainly not new to this line. But, holy hell check these babies out! For once, I’m actually not trying to be an adolescent about the topic because quite frankly Ivy’s pair of lovelies are an amazing piece of work and they deserve better. Not only are they beautifully sculpted, but the coloring of the skin tone compliments them so well. I get the feeling that these were a labor of love and that the sculptor, Jack Mathews, had a good time doing it.

It’s hard to top Ivy’s chest, so let’s just wrap it up with a quick look at her base. After releasing just a few statues in this line, DCC began making the bases more or less uniform and so we get simple ovoid platform, which is personalized with a green paint job and a leaf etched into the side. The limitation information is on the bottom and the base rests on four tiny felt pads. I mention the pads because one of them fell off my Supergirl statue shortly after featuring it here and I hope that’s not going to be the case here.

Ivy has an MSRP of about a hundred bucks, but I was easily able to find her for $75, which certainly isn’t unreasonable. Sure, it’s no secret that this current Cover Girls line is considered to have lost some of the luster from the original Adam Hughes run of statues. There’s certainly some basis for that argument. I don’t think the statues have been as good, but I don’t think they’re bad either. I now have five of these ladies on my shelf and I’ve been satisfied with each and every one of them. Now, with that having been said, I think Ivy here is the first to come close to reclaiming the magic of the line’s former incarnation. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say I like this one better than the original Cover Girls release of the character. I don’t know if this is an instance of DCC upping their game or just the stars aligning to produce an exceptionally nice looking piece, but she’s definitely going to be taking a front row spot on my Cover Girls shelf.
